Social Capital Networks: Navigating Academic Resources for Low-Income Vietnamese American Students

Fri, April 28, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Vietnamese Americans, among other Southeast Asian groups, have the lowest educational attainment of Asian American ethnic groups. As this population continues to grow it is imperative that support and resources are allocated to ensure higher success. Drawing on social capital literature, this study examines the factors within homes, schools, and communities that impact the academic achievement and experiences of high achieving, low-income, second generation Vietnamese American college students. Data included purposive sampling of 40 students from 4-year universities. Results from the qualitative data analyses reveal parental expectation and support, positive teacher/counselor-student relationships, and peer influence among the major influences in educational achievement.
