The Relationship Between School Counselors and Parents for College-Going

Abstract

This study investigated the relationships between school counselors and parents on the postsecondary course enrollments using a nationally representative sample of students from the data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS: 2009; Ingels, et al, 2011). Using a multinomial logistic regression, the findings indicate that parents’ postsecondary expectations, participation in schools and STEM engagement contributed students’ postsecondary education. Regarding parent-school counselor relationship, parent contact with the school counselor was negatively associated with taking postsecondary classes. The study suggests that school counselors and educators find innovative ways to partner with parents to increase students’ college success.
