Chilean History Teachers Dealing With Curriculum Modifications

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an understanding of the current issues of concern for secondary school history teachers working in the region of Valparaiso, Chile, who a currently dealing with curriculum modifications. The research is located within the interpretivist paradigm and adopts grounded theory approaches to data gathering and analysis. Thirty individual semi-structured interviews in all were conducted. Data gathering and analysis were undertaken simultaneously. Issues identified by teachers can be classified into three levels according to the perceived effect that they have on the participants in their work. These levels relate to ‘inconveniences’, ‘impediments’, and ‘impending threats’. The findings of this study can provide insights for key stakeholders to assist teachers in the implementation process of new curriculum frameworks.
