Abstract

Shadow education, also known as private supplementary tutoring, is the paid tutoring provided exclusively on academic subjects and takes place after the school hours. In order to prepare for the National College Entrance Examination (the Gaokao), private tutoring is largely employed among students in China. This study aims to investigate the relationship between private tutoring and Chinese students’ NCEE performance including other potential factors (e.g. gender, registered residence status, family SES, academic track, etc.) among those enrolled in postsecondary institutions in China.
