Although significant progress on university science teaching has been made over the past few decades to identify and understand undergraduate students’ preconceptions of a variety of science concepts and how preconceptions influence student learning, few studies have examined student engagement in undergraduate classrooms. The purpose of the present study is to validate a recently reported instrument, the Classroom Learning, Engagement, Attitudes, and Perceptions (CLEAP). It was found that although the component scales of the CLEAP instrument were internally consistent, there was lack of construct validity in terms of the conceptualized components. Further revision and validation of the instrument was necessary. This study contributes to the continuing development of an instrument for measuring university student classroom engagement.
