Virtual Coaching: Using Principal Candidates to Improve Teacher Candidate Instruction

Mon, May 1, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

A collaborative virtual coaching model that improves the instructional practice of teacher candidates is described. This project utilized principal candidates enrolled in a graduate level Educational Leadership program to improve the instructional practices of junior level teacher candidates. The one-to-one virtual coaching allows teacher candidates to receive timely, specific feedback on their teaching, which they are able to apply in their next teaching episode, improving their practice over time. Principal candidates also benefit from this project as they are able to practice evaluating and giving meaningful, specific feedback to teacher candidates in an authentic, low-risk environment. The structure and design of the project as well as preliminary findings associated with the project will be presented.
