African American Doctoral Students Experiencing Psychological Warfare at a Predominantly White Institution

Abstract

This study takes a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to exploring the psychological warfare experienced by nine African American doctoral candidates who attended a predominantly white research institution in the Midwest. The findings indicate that psychological warfare is experienced as pervasive and just as inherent as systemic racism within academe. The implications of this study answer questions of how African American doctoral students are socialized into the academy and experience the culture of doctoral education and overall campus climate.
