Abstract

The goal of this paper is to explore the relationship between agency and academic professional identity (API). API is linked to how faculty members perceive themselves as professional workers; this identity allows faculty members to pursue both institutional missions and personal interests. API is developed primarily during graduate education, through the socialization process with peers, professors, and advisors. After graduate school API is determined by the personal characteristics of faculty members, such as agency, gender, and race-ethnicity and also by their work environments. Work environments influence the kind of emotions that faculty members have towards the academic profession.
