Interviews on the Staircase: Considering Tensions and Innovations in the Work of Urban Youth Co-Researchers

Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

As youth of color continue to encounter inequitable access to educational opportunities, youth co-researcher methodologies in qualitative research provide promising approaches for achieving three goals: centering discussions of educational reform in the experiences and perspectives of youth; creating opportunities for youth co-researchers to develop academic literacies supportive of their college access; and creating spaces for youth of color in low-socioeconomic status (SES) urban communities to challenge educational inequities. This paper examines the methodological tensions and innovations that emerge from a youth co-researcher study examining how and why 10 Black and Latina youth from low-SES urban communities support one another’s college access. This paper examines qualitative research reflecting youth’s lived experiences by expanding methodological choices to include youth as co-researchers.
