Diversification of Career Pathways in Engineering: The Impact of a Historically Black College/University Faculty and Student Seminar

Sun, April 30, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Diversifying and preparing U.S. ethnic minorities (i.e., blacks) for careers in engineering is critical to the continued economic viability and growth of the nation. Thus, as a means to address the need to diversify and prepare U.S. ethnic minorities in engineering, a professional development seminar was implemented to provide targeted activities and integrated professional expertise to support the preparedness of engineering faculty of color (Associate Professors)and engineering students of color (rising juniors). The program evaluation study examined the impact of the one-day convening facilitating the readiness of engineering associate professors to become Professor-Ready and engineering students to become Graduate-School Ready. Preliminary findings reveal increased understanding by both groups of the elements needed for advancement in related engineering career trajectories.
