Brazilian Curriculum Reforms (1998–2009): Focusing the Notion of Curriculum Innovation on the High School Level

Mon, May 1, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

This text is part of a set of investigations that focus on the meaning that the term "curriculum innovation" is taking on educational reforms, in teacher training course and basic education. Here we analyze the National High School Exam as part of these reforms in Brazil. Dialoguing with Thomas Popkewitz, Ian Hacking and Michel Foucault, we analyze curriculum policies through a discursive approach in a historical perspective. We are interested in understanding how the creation of areas of knowledge in this exam is working on the fabrication of certain types of subjects. Such innovation keeps disciplinary concepts in a way that, while it seems to be something new, it stabilizes the content of school subjects, regulating what is considered knowledge.
