Navigating the Future: Sources of Support From Latina/o High School Students

Abstract

High school dropout rates for Latino students in the United States remain high, while college enrollment rates remain low. This study focuses on the sources of support Latina/o high school students receive about their future goals. The goal of the study was to see what forms of support are advantageous for Latino students’ college aspirations. Data was collected through semi-structured one-on-one interviews with 26 high school students in a Southern California high school. The majority of the participants report that their parents value education and support their studies by providing various types of support and guidance. The role of teachers and counselors is also explored.
