Implementing Precollege Math Remediation in High School: Evaluation of Tennessee Seamless Alignment and Integrated Learning Support

Abstract

Our study evaluates the implementation of a technology-centered curriculum that has replaced traditional remedial 12th-grade math courses in over 140 high schools in Tennessee. The SAILS (Seamless Alignment and Integrated Learning Support) program allows students who would otherwise have to take noncredit developmental math in college to instead take the identical course during their senior year of high school. Through surveys and site visits, we found that SAILS students reported more math confidence and had higher postsecondary aspirations than their non-SAILS peers. Additionally, in SAILS classrooms, students and teachers generally liked the non-traditional classroom setting, where students move at their own pace and teachers serve as facilitators.
