Abstract

Research shows that community based courses can have a positive impact on student learning outcomes in higher education. However, most of this research concentrates on students only, without consideration of faculty and community partners. This study sought to address the need for a more holistic understanding of community based courses through an ethnographic approach. The study investigated the roles of all participants and the culture shaped in the class through the structures and relationships that formed. Results showed that collaboration between all groups allowed for students, the instructor, and community partners to take on the role of learner in academic, civic, and social justice outcomes, ultimately showing the educative value of community based courses for all participants involved.
