This paper examines the practice of teaching philosophical foundations in online and hybrid courses with respect to the cultivation of a classroom climate that nurtures and supports the development of critical consciousness in students. The authors of this paper are social and philosophical foundations scholars who possess a successful track record of teaching even the most contentious foundations topics in face-to-face environment. Policy shifts at our institution have led us to teaching the same courses in fully or partially online, web-based environments forcing significant curricular changes. We hope to develop a deeper understanding of this meaning-making in practical, philosophical and theoretical ways.
