The Bridges and Barriers to Environmental Education on an Educating Children Outdoors Campus

Fri, April 28, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

In this intrinsic case study, we investigated the challenges and opportunities faced by teachers at an elementary school who have access to numerous environmental education resources, including a nature trail, outdoor classroom, bird sanctuary, butterfly garden, frog habitat, and air quality monitoring station, as well as administrative support to utilize them. Although most of the participants in the study affirmed the importance of environmental education and taking students outside, they rarely acted upon this belief. Our analysis of the data revealed several common themes, including lack of time and training, perceived irrelevance to the curriculum, and commitment to not crossing disciplinary boundaries. We conclude there must be a multifaceted approach to supporting the regular and extensive use of the resources.
