In this conceptual paper, we were inspired by the need for methodological plurality and creative, imaginary engagement with research (Koro-Ljungberg, 2012). We offer a dialogue on integrating action research and evaluation to examine possibilities for a more engaged work and alternative views of knowledge in internally-driven and context-specific settings. We describe the field, examine points of intersection, and provide examples from our practice. We argue that integration can advance the rigor of action research, and emphasize the importance of continuous improvement. The integration can also improve the expanse and use of internal evaluation, and the various evaluation theories that can help to formulate an evaluation plan. Finally, the integration can contribute to knowledge mobilization and knowledge democracy.
