Expert, Partner, or Con Artist? Exploring the Influence of Management Consulting Firms on University Governance

Sun, April 30, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Over the past decade, numerous private and public universities have sought the services of prominent global management consulting firms. Researchers in higher education, however, have yet to explore this phenomenon. We find this silence curious because these engagements raise important questions about the influence of consulting firms on university governance. First, we analyze the literature on consultants in higher education and the management literature on consulting firms. We then analyze recent engagements between American universities and global management consulting firms. Consulting firms have recommended significant changes to administrative functions, but they also have proposed changes to academic programs and academic governance. In conclusion, we specify opportunities for future research on the influence of consulting firms on university governance.
