Service-Learning and Transfer of Learning: Roles of Cognitive Conflict and Behavior Engagement

Fri, April 28, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 218

Abstract

Service-Learning (SL) is recommended as one of the high-impact educational practices in higher education. However, few empirical studies explored the psychological mechanism of SL’s impact on transfer of learning. A quasi-experiment was conducted to examine the effect of SL on Chinese college students’ transfer of learning. Ninety students received the traditional instruction, and ninety-six students received the SL instruction. The independent t-test showed that the students in the SL group demonstrated better transfer performance than the traditional group. To explore the mechanism of SL, the 96 students in SL group were asked to complete the cognitive conflict scale and engagement scale. Results showed that cognitive conflict was associated with transfer. Behavior engagements mediated the relationship between cognitive conflicts and transfer.
