School-Based and Out-of-School Clinical Experiences in an Elementary Residency: Lessons From the Field

Mon, May 1, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Evidence from an elementary residency chronicles how a community based organization and a school of education have leveraged expertise to utilize and integrate two distinct clinical experiences. Residents are co-teachers in the classroom of an elementary school mentor teacher during the school day and afterschool they are lead teachers in their afterschool classroom. The paper presents the creation, implementation and findings of how dissimilar roles during residency clinical experiences combine to develop deeply thoughtful, knowledgeable and highly effective teachers.
