The Educational and Spiritual Influence of Howard and Sue Bailey Thurman

Abstract

This study examines the lives of Howard Thurman (1900-1981) and Sue Bailey Thurman (1904-1996) and their influence on 20th century American interracial and interfaith relations, and in higher education. African American theologian, Baptist preacher, teacher, intellectual, humanitarian, accomplished writer, and devoted husband and father, Howard Thurman should be recognized as one of the most influential religious figures in twentieth-century America and as a man who possessed a unique vision and message for higher education. This study provides insight into the experiences and educational thought of two influential African American leaders whose individual and collective commitments and life work represented significant contributions to the social discourse between religion, education, and interracial relationships.
