Development of a Holistic Instrument to Assess the Need and Readiness of "Forgotten Middle" Students

Abstract

Consistent with a holistic perspective, the main purpose of this study was to develop a multi-dimensional instrument that broadly assesses the academic, behavioral, and motivational need and readiness of forgotten middle students. This presentation will describe the development of this instrument, including steps taken to establish validity and reliability, and report results associated with statistical analysis of instrument data. In this study, the holistic instrument was used for the purpose of identifying participants for a community support program that targets students in the forgotten middle.
