Validation of an Adaptive Measure of Reading Motivation

Abstract

Because reading motivation has the potential to impact reading achievement, measuring reading motivation effectively is crucial. A measure of reading motivation called the ARMM assesses multiple constructs that make up reading motivation through an online computer adaptive format that increase reliability and reduce the amount of time needed to take the assessment. The following study validates the ARMM by examining how sub-scales relate to reading engagement, reading behavior, and reading achievement as well as examining differences among grades and gender on each sub-scale. This study indicates that a computer adaptive test is effective for measuring reading motivation. However, findings related to the variance associated with general reading motivation raises questions related to the multi-dimensionality of reading motivation.
