Research Quests are digital learning experiences using museum objects to answer authentic science questions. The paper examines critical thinking processes in which students engage when using 3D prints and 3D virtual models of dinosaur fossils during a Research Quest. We also examine the utility of 3D models as perceived by students. Results show that students use models to make observations, identify research questions for analysis, evaluate ideas, and compare evidence during analysis. However, students rarely consider multiple possibilities while using models. Survey results show that students rate both types of models very highly in terms of utility, value, and motivation. Final paper will include additional analysis of verbal data, including how and when students used 3D models in their reasoning.
