Summer: More Than Just Fun, an Extension to Academic Learning

Fri, April 28, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Students who are not involved in academic activities during the summer months tend to fall behind academically. This is especially true for students who struggle in areas of reading and math (Cooper, 2001). Cooper et al (2000) found that summer programs focusing on remedial, accelerated or enriched learning had a positive impact on the knowledge and skills of participants. It is paramount that African American and Hispanic students are provided with opportunities to enhance and/or maintain their current academic ability. This research project focused on evaluating the effectiveness of summer enrichment in Math on African American and Hispanic 7th and 8th grade students.
