Personalizing Online Professional Development, by Design

Abstract

Rapid advances in technology offer unprecedented possibilities to help all students become truly multiliterate, but educators need professional development to fully realize this potential. However, due to location and economic factors, those teaching the most marginalized students often have the least opportunity to experience effective professional development. Online PD is a possible solution to this dilemma, but is too often offered in an ineffective, noninteractive, one-size-fits-all format. This paper describes the design, implementation and initial results of a fully-online, personalized year-long professional development project aimed at helping school librarians from small rural districts in the state of Georgia come together to gain vital knowledge and skills to support struggling students and develop strong cultures of multiliteracy in their schools.
