Abstract

Increasingly, social justice advocates and community leaders are using online formats to promote their stories, plan and implement action, and strengthen bonds within both communities of geography and practice. Yet, educational researchers have too often turned away from using social media platforms and may not have the skills to effectively use such media to promote their work or build bridges to practitioners and community stakeholders. By focusing on the Black Lives Matter hashtag (#BLM), this research seeks to understand the use of Twitter for advocacy and inform the use of online platforms in research and advocacy in order to honor the voices of the community as well as to build opportunities to address inequities.
