"They Hate on Me!" Black Teachers Addressing Their White Colleagues' Racism

Sun, April 30, 8:15 to 9:45am, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Third Floor, Bonham E

Abstract

The research findings presented in this paper are part of a larger study that focuses on black teachers who practice emancipatory pedagogies in an effort to help their students navigate life in a society where they will face multiple forms and levels of racism. While I sought to understand how black teachers prepare black students to experience racism, the data revealed that black teachers spent a lot of their time and energy teaching black students how to respond to the racism that their white teachers displayed. The purpose of this paper is to examine the ways in which black teachers worked to interrupt the racism that their colleagues displayed both to their students and to black teachers.
