Examining nine years of instructor’s collected field notes from teaching in a studio course on instructional graphics, conceptual changes and a transformation of practice with regard to studio critique are identified and described. Traditional wall crit and supplemental desk crit have given way to desk crit as a primary means of feedback with student-to-student discussions and public debriefing replacing wall crit. Assessments focus on the emerging characteristics and strengths of each student as a designer rather than detailed commentary on artifacts. These changes in studio teaching are related to important concerns of design pedagogy, particularly students’ design identities and the development of design character.
