Literacy Education of Minority/Indigenous Children in a Globalized World: A Comparative Exploration of English-Only Policy

Thu, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

This presentation reports findings of an exploratory study that was intended to explore effects of globalization on K-12 language teacher education with the reference to the English-only policy in the United States, through the perspectives of teacher candidates, students and faculty members of a Southwest US university. The results of the study suggest that the English-only policy is one of the major barriers to the literacy development of minority and indigenous children.
