Engaging Geographically Distributed Teachers in Technology Design: The Scenario-Guided Design Evaluation Methodology

Abstract

As research continually demonstrates, it is critical to involve teachers in the design process as they best understand their specific needs and goals. This paper describes a methodology, Scenario-Guided Design Evaluation, for systematically engaging a distributed team of teachers in a user-centered design (USD) process. This methodology draws on scenario, personas, and concepts from the Concerns-Based Adoption Model. We describe its use in the context of an online professional development site with results from a series of analyses to assess the utility and usability of the methodology for: 1) eliciting potential design issues, 2) helping teaches extend their perspectives to a broader range of users, 3) facilitating equitable participation in design feedback, and 4) yielding actionable design feedback.
