Questioning is a teaching practice that is significantly related to the quality of student mathematics students’ learning in classroom contexts. However, teachers were found to have difficulty in posing questions to understand students and using follow-up questions to push students to clarify their thoughts. Thus, it is important for teacher education program to help preservice teachers develop their competence to question. This study examines how pre-service teachers who took the innovative mathematics methods course pose and develop follow up questions. It found that while they posed many initial questions, they seldom posed follow-up questions. Additionally, they were not equally attentive to understanding students. Implications for pre-service teacher education are discussed.
