Abstract

Collaboration is an important part of 21st century learning and yet it is difficult for teachers to manage and support students in practicing this skill in normal classroom settings. This paper presents the preliminary results of group level collaboration quality coding as a first step in automating targeted feedback to teachers using student speech data. Nearly all sessions included at least three of the four levels of the coding scheme across items. Therefore, groups should not be categorized as “good collaborators”; rather most groups show evidence of good collaboration at various points during their interaction. This work provides early evidence for the development of technological tools that would support teachers in assessing and teaching collaboration.
