Abstract

This paper explores interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) in classrooms over a decade and compares their use. early research described the ‘wow’ effect of the large display and touch sensitive board, reporting the enthusiasm of teachers and students and the novelty of the technology. It was often argued that the unique presentation and tactile features are the key components that will transform teaching and learning. However, recent research indicated that the novelty had worn off and the students were no longer in the ‘wow’ stage. In addition, IWBs were mostly used as a presentation tool. This paper argues that a holistic approach to interactivity around IWBs focusing on the cultural and historical context of its use will transform the teaching and learning.
