Sun, April 30, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

National statistics indicate a need for effective teachers who teach English Language Learners. The purpose of this study was to examine Dual Language and ESL teachers’ perceptions of school administration, program implementation, program features, school and community, and adequate training. The sample consisted of 335 teachers in 40 school districts in Texas. Findings suggested that successful second language programs have qualified and committed teachers, provide students with opportunities to value languages and cultures, and have ongoing training and administrative support. Inquiring about how programs are implemented provides information on the fidelity of the program. This study adds to our knowledge base by examining Dual Language and ESL teachers’ perceptions about the program implementation and their instructional practice.
