An Exploration of Culturally Responsive Teacher Practices Using Discourse Analysis

Fri, April 28, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

In this session, I will discuss my exploration of culturally responsive classroom management practices through the lens of discourse analysis of an African American teacher’s handling of a discipline situation involving non-white boys. I connect my analysis to the limited scholarship documenting what culturally responsive classroom management might look like in practice, thus making a material contribution to the literature on how some practitioners are able to circumvent the use of harsh disciplinary sanctions via the use of their own personal power.
