Abstract

This paper examines the experiences of young black girls with an anti-gang program that polices youth through community and school initiatives. Data for this paper comes from a 3 year qualitative study that includes observations of and formal interviews with young black men and women, community leaders and school officials. Youth voices are central to this qualitative study that strives to highlight the barriers to quality education young black women face and the resilience they demonstrate. More specifically, this paper examines the experiences of young black girls with forms of criminalization through policing in their schools and their community.
