Constraints on Instructional Media Design: How Do Media Developers Deal With Them?

Abstract

Scholars report that practitioners do not follow the procedures suggested by models of instructional design. This gap between practice and models might come from researchers’ lack of understanding of actual instructional design practices. Since the work of media developers has not been well documented in our field (Beriswill, 2011), this study conducted interviews and observations of instructional media developers in order to understand the realities of their work. Particularly, since scholars suggest that there are several factors that could affect the decisions of designers, this study investigated the constraints that exist in the workplace of media developers and how they deal with such constraints. The media developers generated various creative strategies in order to satisfy the demands of clients.
