In recent years, "green open access," or self-archiving, has been praised by its supporters as a solution to the restrictive model of academic journal publishing that fulfills the university’s mission to disseminate new knowledge. The purpose of this study is to examine why prestigious research universities of a similar caliber differ in their support for open access publishing. Informed by institutional theory and institutional entrepreneurship, the study employs a multi-case study of four AAU member-universities to address the research question: how do university faculty, librarians, and administrators at AAU universities understand their responsibilities to society to disseminate scholarship, and how does this understanding inform open access campaigns and policies?
