Teachers' Religious Ideologies and Classroom Equity

Mon, May 1, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 214 A

Abstract

The rapidly changing cultural demographics filtering into communities woven with strong Christian beliefs might present a conundrum for teachers who may not necessarily be prepared to teach within the diverse settings. In this study, five veteran teachers provide insight into the importance that religion plays in their lives and the conundrum it might present for them. This research focuses on how teachers’ backgrounds influence what they notice about students, families, and communities. The results provide thought to how teachers’ faith sustains them in their work as well as serve as a catalyst for student care when challenges arise. Additionally, findings indicate teachers’ struggle with promoting curriculum that might push on their beliefs.
