The Development of Intercultural Communicative Competence for Second Language Learners

The topic of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) has drawn a great interest in second language learning. The burgeoning interest in ICC raised a question of how to develop language learners’ ICC as well as how to identify and evaluate ICC. Grounded in Byram’s (1997) ICC model, the current telecollaborative study explores second language learners’ ICC development. The current study with adult second language learners in an out-of-school context shows that they developed ICC through interacting with target language speakers online and participants’ blog writings are good instances to display their ICC. Further pedagogical and research implications are discussed.
