The National Human Rights Education Network: A Catalyst for Policy and Practice

Abstract

In this paper, I argue that a network of human rights educators and organizations is a catalyst for advancing human rights education (HRE) in the United States. This network, Human Rights Educators USA, was formed in 2012. I conducted a survey of 40 current and former members of the network and analyzed the results using social network analysis. This allowed me to understand how the network operates and how it has contributed to advancing HRE in this country since inception. Results demonstrate differences in collaborations around creating curricula, sharing resources, conducting workshops, advocating for policies, and implementing programs. These collaborations have translated into gains in HRE policy and practice on the local and national levels across the United States.
