Learning Beyond the Classroom Walls: What Can Preservice Teachers Learn?

Abstract

As the student population has become more diverse than ever, it is crucial for preservice teachers to better equip themselves with the knowledge and skills to work with all children and their families. This study presents findings of a group of twenty-eight first year preservice teachers who learned to develop empathy, global awareness, and beyond from a case study that required them to have intercultural dialogues with their international penpals along with examining the current event. Qualitative analysis indicates that the case study created avenues which advanced preservice teachers’ educational experience that could be carried over into the future classroom as well as deeply scrutinized their awareness of social issues at home and abroad, and their attitudes toward diverse student populations.
