This study explored contributors to civic engagement for diverse college students, with an emphasis on curricular and pedagogical practices that increase this democratic outcome. We employed a structural equation model to examine how an inclusive curriculum, academic validation, and critical consciousness and action shape civic engagement across different racial groups. Our study illustrates how the development of critical consciousness is integral to the development of civic engagement, and how both an inclusive curriculum and academic validation directly shape this critical intermediate outcome. A few differences in direct and indirect effects between these factors are observed between racial groups.
