Abstract

This study used phone interviews with 11 graduate(d) student athletes in Division I football to fill the need for graduate(d) student athletes’ narratives of their own pathways and the meaning they make of them (Haslerig, 2013). Narrative analysis provides an ideal lens for these larger objectives; however, telephone interviews have traditionally been considered a last resort data collection method, used only for convenience when face-to-face interviews are unfeasible (Novick, 2008). Using narrative data collected through phone interviews with eleven graduate(d) student athletes, this paper examines participants’ academic trajectories and experiences, as well as the efficacy of phone interviewing techniques for this elite population.
