Planning Processes in Online Reading and Learning for Solving Ill-Structured Problems

Abstract

This paper investigated the planning processes involved in successful online reading and learning for solving ill-structured problems. Three doctoral students with high levels of online reading competence explored the open Web to complete a complex reading task. Participants’ think-aloud protocols and responses to interviews were used to analyze the planning processes skilled learners use as they interact with the Web. Results showed that they developed a series of plans focusing on particular aspects related to the reading task. The three skilled learners formed new plans or made changes to old plans as they interacted with the Web. They went through either learner-directed processes or Web-directed processes to form a new plan or to leave/modify an initial plan.
