An increasing number of bilingual students are entering schools with more than English as a home language. Paired literacy models, recognize the unique needs of the EB population, using a holistic framework to encourages the instruction and maintenance of both Spanish and English in today’s classroom (Escamilla et. al., 2013). We focused in this study on how teachers may have used language strategically in their instruction to help students connect their languages and talk about language during literacy. We found the most interesting places for strategic use of language, with a need to capture the moments with Potential Opportunities for Purposeful use of Palabras (POP-UPs).
