Latina/o Undergraduates' Experiences at a Hispanic-Serving Institution Research University

Abstract

This paper examines Latina/o undergraduate students’ experiences at a research university which was recently designated Hispanic-Serving Institute (HSI). One hundred undergraduate students participated in workshops on campus regarding how the university can better understand serve Latina/o students. Reports from students indicate the importance of faculty and graduate student mentoring and communication, safe spaces and the significance of student. The importance of a more diverse faculty and cultural competence training for faculty was recommended.
