Collective Resistance: Relational Activism by an Intergenerational Collective of Urban Asian American Educators

Abstract

A collective of twelve urban Asian American educators share stories of their careers within a San Francisco Bay school district. Using critical discourse analysis and narrative inquiry I explore the three dimensionality of their narratives through examining temporality, sociality and place (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000). Their stories show a long-standing generational fight for equity in their schools and district due to racial discrimination and economic marginalization (Chan, 1991). Their narratives act as counter stories, which expand our conceptual understanding of culture and generational belonging. They also present innovative ways to create communities of resistance and persistence within the professional landscape (Clandinin & Connelly, 1997).
