Learning Elementary Math Using PBS KIDS Odd Squad Transmedia Content at School and Home

Fri, April 28, 8:15 to 10:15am, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Fourth Floor, Crockett D

Abstract

The study used a mixed-methods design to explore the effectiveness of using Odd Squad Math, a school- and home-based transmedia mathematics intervention based on the resources in the PBS KIDS Odd Squad transmedia suite, to improve elementary-age students’ mathematics learning, specifically in the domains of Algebraic Thinking and Numbers and Operations. Over the course of the Odd Squad intervention, students’ overall knowledge of mathematics in the domains of Numbers and Operations and Algebraic Thinking increased significantly (Pre-test Mean = 42.80, Post-test Mean = 48.70, p<0.001). In terms of sub-categories of mathematical knowledge, students showed significant and positive changes in the mean score from pre- to post-test on their knowledge of skip counting, pattern recognition, and simple addition and subtraction.
